Floor Heating Pipe

Introduction of PEX-a Pipe

PEX-a Pipe, also known as cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) pipe, is manufactured through the peroxide (PEX-A) process. PEX pipes are mainly utilized in plumbing, heating, and other fluid distribution systems. The "a" in PEX-a pipe refers to the way in which the polyethylene molecules are cross-linked (linked together in a three-dimensional structure), making it more durable and flexible.

Details of PEX-a Pipe

PEX-a Pipe,Type A PEX piping is the most flexible type of PEX piping, making it adaptable for all home water needs, including potable water piping. Type A PEX piping expands most out of the three types, so is most resistant to freezing and cracking, which is important in cold weather climates. While type A PEX is more expensive than the other two types of PEX piping, it is cheaper than copper pipes.

  • Flexibility.
  • Highest pressure resistance.
  • Longest lifetime.
  • Highest resistance to bending collapse

Applications of PEX-a Pipe

Floor Heating systems/Residential Plumbing Systems

Hot and Cold Water Supply: PEX-a pipe is commonly used in both hot and cold water distribution in residential homes.

Hot and cold water plumbing distribution, residential and commercial

PEX-a pipe is often used in large commercial buildings, such as schools, hospitals, and office buildings, for both cold and hot water distribution. Its ease of installation and resistance to corrosion make it an excellent choice for these applications.

Residential fire protection/Reclaimed water piping (purple pipe)/Radiant heating and cooling systems (floors, walls, ceilings)/Hydronic piping and distribution (radiators, fan coils, etc.)/Chilled water piping/Pre-insulated transmission piping, typically for buried applications/Outdoor snow and ice melting/Turf conditioning/pitch heating/Geothermal ground loops (vertical boreholes, horizontal layouts),etc.

FAQ of PEX-a Pipe

Q1,Why use PEX-a pipe?

PEX is a kind of polyethylene material. Its molecular structure is modified through chemical or physical means, resulting in chemical bonds among the polymer chains. The polymer chains of polyethylene (HDPE) are cross-linked to form PEX used for pipes, thereby enhancing its properties like high-temperature strength and performance, flexibility, chemical resistance, environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR), resistance to slow crack growth (SCG), toughness, and wear resistance. Cross-linking turns PEX into a "semi-thermosetting" polymer, offering excellent long-term stability.

Q2,How to cross linking PEX-a pipe?

Peroxide - In this method, organic peroxides are utilized. When heated, they generate reactive free radicals that join the PE chains together as the HDPE compound is extruded. It is sometimes called the PEXa Process.

Silane - This approach involves grafting a reactive silane molecule onto the backbone of the polyethylene, enabling the HDPE compound to crosslink after extrusion as a pipe when exposed to moisture and heat, such as through steam curing. It is sometimes referred to as the PEXb Process.

Electron Beam - Here, a dose of high-energy electrons is subjected to the extruded HDPE pipe. Sometimes it is known as the PEX-c Process.

Q3,Can I use PEX pipe outside?

Yes.However,it must be protected from direct and indirect sunlight.PEX pipe will start to become brittle and crack with continued exposure to sunlight.

Q4,What About PEX vs. CPVC?

The cost of PEX and CPVC almost the same. But there are a little difference to choose PEX.

First, a PEX doesn’t require glue, which means you don’t have to work in well-ventilated spaces or wear a respirator.

Second,PEX pipe is less likely than CPVC pipe to burst if it freezes. Also, since PEX is more flexible and available in long lengths, it can work better for ‘fishing’ through walls in remodeling situations.
